Intelligent & Digital Roadway Infrastructure for Vehicles Integrated with Next-Gen Technologies

  1. What the Alba Iulia pilot entails
This involves installing and testing an advanced traffic monitoring and management system in a high-accident-risk zone—specifically, a major intersection in the municipality that provides access to the west and to the city’s main commercial area, in the vicinity of Stadion–OMV–Kaufland.
For testing purposes, the system will use smart video cameras, speed radars, and traffic sensors to identify speeding, sudden lane changes, and other dangerous behaviors. The collected data will be integrated with the Traffic Management Center in Alba Iulia.
  2. What is proposed
    • Near real-time monitoring of vehicle speed and aggressive behaviors (sudden braking, risky overtaking).
    • Intelligent alerts for drivers, via a mobile app, to prevent incidents.
    • Adaptive traffic lights and optimization of traffic flow based on the collected data (reducing congestion and delayed interventions).
    • Creation of risk maps (heatmaps) for areas with a high accident potential, enabling authorities to take proactive measures.
  3. Objectives
    • Enhanced road safety by reducing accidents and quickly detecting dangerous driving behaviors.
    • Increased traffic efficiency through shorter waiting times and improved circulation.
    • Predictive monitoring, to intervene before high-risk situations escalate.
    • Integration with existing infrastructure (signage, mobile apps, traffic platforms), in compliance with legal and data protection regulations.
  4. Advantages for road users
    • Drivers: near real-time alerts about high-risk areas, improved travel times, and fewer costly incidents.
    • Cyclists: greater safety on dedicated lanes, more predictable traffic, and better visibility through adapted signage.
    • Pedestrians: safer crossings, reduced excessive speeds in pedestrian areas, and faster response from authorities to hazardous situations.
  5. Benefits for traffic management in Alba Iulia
    • Rapid, well-founded decisions through near real-time data access and predictive analysis.
    • Reduced congestion and faster response times in case of accidents.
    • Long-term strategic planning, using heatmaps and reports on driving behaviors.
    • More efficient resource use (staff, time, budget) by optimally coordinating intervention teams.

Through this pilot, Alba Iulia aims to become an example of a smart city, focused on ensuring the safety of all traffic participants and on continuously improving urban mobility.
