This week the iDriving consortium is in Karlovac, Croatia. Today and tomorrow, 19–20 October 2026, the partners meet for the project’s 3rd Plenary Meeting. On 21–22 October 2026, they will then take their solutions onto the city’s roads for a two-day pilot trial. The trial is led by Infra Plan Consulting and the City of Karlovac, together with the iDriving technical partners working on this pilot.
What will be tested
The Karlovac pilot is part of iDriving’s Use Case 2, Infrastructure maintenance and hazard monitoring, which focuses on detecting road defects in real time and using digital twins to plan maintenance before problems become dangerous. The trial covers two scenarios, one on each day:
- Wednesday 21 October, rural road (Mekušanska cesta): Acceligence, the iDriving partner from Cyprus, will carry out drone flights over the road to detect defects, and the results will be fed into the iDriving digital twin platform, a virtual model of the road, where they can be viewed in 3D.
- Thursday 22 October, urban street (Ulica Branka Čavlovića Čavleka): the partners will test how a roadworks zone can be monitored and kept safe, how workers and road users can be alerted, and how traffic can be rerouted.
Each day ends with a review of the test results, and the second day also looks at the lessons learned.
Why it matters
Secondary roads and city streets need regular maintenance, and both damaged road surfaces and roadworks can put people at risk. Spotting defects early means roads can be repaired before they become a hazard, rather than after. Where roadworks are under way, clear and timely warnings and well-planned diversions help protect both the workers and the people driving, cycling or walking past. By testing on a rural road and an urban street, the Karlovac pilot shows how these tools work in real conditions.
Preparing at the 3rd Plenary Meeting
The 3rd Plenary Meeting takes place today and tomorrow at AQUATIKA, the freshwater aquarium in Karlovac, hosted by Infra Plan Consulting. Today, the partners review progress across the project and hear updates from the other pilot sites, including the results and lessons learned from the pilot in Thessaloniki earlier this month. Tomorrow is dedicated to preparing the Karlovac trial: technical readiness, legal and ethical requirements, and how data and images will be collected.
Karlovac is the next stop after the iDriving trials in Graz (February) and Thessaloniki (6–8 October). We will share highlights from Karlovac here and on our social media channels.
