iDriving research was part of the scientific programme of the Transport Research Arena (TRA) 2026, one of Europe’s leading conferences on transport research and innovation, held in Budapest from 18 to 21 May 2026.
A new catalogue of road safety criteria
On 18 May, Infra Plan Consulting presented the paper “Enhanced Safety Criteria Catalogue for Urban and Secondary Roads” by Irina Stipanović, Leon Kučinić, Iva Mejašić, Thomas Bapaume, Mostafa Ameli and Nikos Dourvas. The paper introduces a new generation of road safety performance indicators that combine data on infrastructure, vehicles, road users and traffic management with AI-driven analytics and real-time monitoring.
By bringing together the factors that shape risk on our streets, rather than the road alone, the catalogue supports more dynamic safety assessment and proactive road safety management, in line with the EU Road Safety Policy Framework 2021–2030 and the Vision Zero ambition. The paper will be published open access in the conference proceedings, Re-Generation in Transport (Springer), expected in November 2026.
Monitoring road pavement in 3D
A second iDriving paper, “Semantic-Aware 3D Gaussian Splatting for Road Pavement Condition Monitoring” by Panagiotis Vrachnos, Alexandros Petropoulos, Ilias Koulalis, Irina Stipanović, Nikolaos Dourvas, Konstantinos Ioannidis and Stefanos Vrochidis, was accepted at TRA 2026. Led by CERTH, it explores how detailed 3D models of the road, which also identify what each part of the scene is, can help monitor pavement condition. The paper is available open access on Zenodo.
